Business Recorder op-ed writer Rashed Rahman in the latest article "Fresh betrayals of the Palestinian cause" for the newspaper has raised a very important point that certainly constitutes a sardonic comment on the state of Left.
According to him, for example, "It is another sign of the decline of progressive culture and politics that no Left organisation has uttered even a squeak in protest against the UAE's betrayal. Only the religious right, in the shape of the Milli Yakjehti Council, held rallies of protest in the cities of Pakistan. The Pakistani Left has many sins of omission to its credit. Now one more of abandoning internationalist solidarity can be placed at its doorstep."
This may be true for the Pakistani Left. Insofar as most of the Left, both in Europe and the US, is concerned, it raises a strong voice against the suffering of Palestinians although religious language now permeates a once proudly secular Palestinian identity.
