ISLAMABAD: The Upper House of the Parliament on Friday paid homage to Hasil Khan Bizenjo for his "contribution to the promotion of democracy", and passed a unanimous resolution to pay tribute to the late senator in recognition of his contributions as a parliamentarian.
Bizenjo, the chief of National Party (NP) lost his life to lungs cancer in Karachi earlier on Thursday. During Senate session presided over by Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, the senators, regardless of their political affiliations, spoke highly of Bizenjo, and paid him profound tribute.
Pervaiz Rashid, Raza Rabbani, Azam Swati, Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Sassui Palijo, Usman Kakar, Mushahid Ullah Khan, Sherry Rehman, Sarfraz Bugti, Barrister Saif, Sabir Shah, Mushtaq Ahmed, Javed Abbasi, Sitara Ayaz, Rehman Malik Molvi Faiz Muhammad, and Raja Zafarul Haq shared their views on the occasion.
Later, Haq, the Leader of the Opposition in Senate, presented the condolence resolution, which was unanimously passed by the House. Last year, in an unprecedented move in Pakistan's legislative history, the joint opposition, except for Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), had moved a no-confidence motion against the chairman Senate, and had fielded Bizenjo as its candidate for the position of chairman Senate.
The voting on the resolution took place on August 1, 2019. Sanjrani narrowly survived the no-confidence motion just by three votes, in what came as a major setback to the joint opposition that had 64 votes in favour of the no-confidence resolution but ended up with only 50 votes in favour of Bizenjo, whereas, it needed 53 votes to prove majority against Sanjrani.
Meanwhile, Leader of the House in the Senate Dr Shahzad Waseem on Friday said that controlling the Covid-19 pandemic, reduction in current account deficit, and increasing foreign remittances, were some of the achievements, which reflected the successful policies of the present government.
He, while speaking to the media, said international community was acknowledging Pakistan's success against the coronavirus. Waseem said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies exposed the real face of India, adding that India was isolating in the world due to the fascist policies of Modi's government.
Kashmiri people have raised their flag of independence, despite facing barbarism of Indian forces against them in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), he said. In a separate development, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Gabriela Cuevas Barron along with a delegation comprising two Mexican members parliament is scheduled to visit Pakistan on the invitation of Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani from 23 till 28th of August, 2020.
The visit aims to foster institutional linkages between Senate of Pakistan and the IPU to strengthen foundations of democracy and promote mutual collaboration at highest levels, a statement said.
"Pakistan Senate has consistently played an active and robust role on the forum as it considers parliamentary diplomacy pivotal in peace, development and social and economic prosperity.
The current visit is taking place at a high time when Pakistan like other nations is faced with challenge of Covid-19 and the world is calling for a joint effort to overcome not only the pandemic but also mitigate the social and economic impacts of the disease on the communities specially the ones having feeble health infrastructure," a press release issued by the Senate Secretariat said.
The delegation, during its visit, will be having parleys with the president, the prime minister, the Senate chairman, and the speaker of the National Assembly, and hold other important interactions, the press release added. It is first-ever visit of the incumbent IPU president, it said.
