Germans are the "world's leading honey eaters," at 88,000 tonnes per year, the German ministry of consumption announced on Tuesday. Europe's biggest economy consumes the equivalent of 1.1 kilogrammes (2.42 pounds) of honey per person each year, a ministry statement added.
One quarter of the total is produced by 700,000 German beehives, while the rest is imported, the ministry said.
