ISLAMABAD: Monsoon has become active over upper parts of the country producing widespread thunderstorm/rains, which may generate flood situation of exceptional high flood in major rivers, said an alert/advisory issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department Flood Forecasting Division.
According to latest hydro-meteorological situation, monsoon has become active over upper parts of the country producing widespread thunderstorm/rains.
This weather system is likely to persist over the areas during next 36 hours with high probability of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Rivers Kabul, Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi, and moderate to heavy rainfall in upper Indus Basin, said the advisory.
Heavy downpours may generate flood situation of exceptional high flood in River Jhelum at Mangla (Upstream) and high flood in River Chenab at Marala, Khanki and Qadirabad.
Medium flood is also expected in the nullahs of Chenab and Ravi rivers and tributaries of River Kabul during next 48 hours. All the concerned authorities are advised to remain alert in the coming days and take precautionary measures, the advisory added. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) situation report on August 24, 25, 2020, heavy rains recorded in areas district of Sindh (Mirpur Khas, Tharparkar, Karachi, Badin, Thatta, Hyderabad, Chhor and Tando Jam).
It further stated that 90 people were killed including 31 children across the country during the current monsoon spell and 40 others were injured.
Sindh topped the list with 31 deaths followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with 23, and Balochistan 15.
Further, according to overall preliminary damages of infrastructure and private properties 195 properties were damaged, while 891 were damaged partially. The NDMA has provided 1,000 tents in Sindh, 2,100 in Balochistan, and 72 in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Water Ponding/inundation was reported in many areas.
De-watering teams of Armed Forces and the district administrations along with de-watering pumps have been deployed at various locations for clearance of water. Many people were evacuated from vulnerable areas and shifted to safer places. District administrations are assessing the damages caused due to recent spell of heavy rains. On 25 August 2020, due to heavy rains, landslide was reported at Gulastan-e-Johar, District Karachi.
