Monsoon downpour plays havoc in interior Sindh, expose poor infrastructure

Published August 27, 2020

(Karachi) The recent spell of monsoon rains not only wreaked havoc in Karachi but it also brought widespread destruction in different cities of interior Sindh. Heavy rains resulted in tragic flooding and flash floods in interior Sindh, causing serious damages to properties and human lives.

The heavy downpour crippled normal life as rainwater accumulated on streets exposing the poor infrastructure and negligence of civic bodies.

Larkana

Widespread rains coupled with thunderstorm lashed the district causing a massive power outage and flooding. The entire district received heavy rain inundating low-lying areas and causing severe disruption in road communication.

Citizens of the city complained on social media that Police Headquarter and other government buildings are filled with water, the city is flooded and the administration is nowhere to be seen. They highlighted that many people have fallen sick, while some have been injured and cars have been damaged.

They said that billions of rupees have been allocated for uplift of Larkana but the the city is still in a shambles.

Even the district police complained about the negligence and lack of municipal activity for drainage and cleaning. In a video posted on social media, a cop of a local police station said that despite imposing rain emergency in the province by Sindh government, none of the municipal staff was present on the roads to drain out water.

He added that three to four feet of water had accumulated at the control centre of the police station which created difficulties for the policemen in discharging their duties. He maintained that accumulated water is causing hardship for the complainants as they cannot reach the police station to lodge their complaints.

Hyderabad

Most parts of Hyderabad inundated in water after the sixth spell of rainfall hit the city. Power supply to the city also disrupted with first drops of rain. Due to lack of proper arrangements to dispose of rainwater, all major thoroughfares and streets were submerged in rainwater.

Many parts of Qasimabad, Latifabad, Sabzi Mandi area and Shah Makki road remained flooded with rainwater. The vicinity of Hyderabad railway station was also badly affected as almost knee deep water had accumulated outside the station and railway tracks were submerged under rainwater.

Umerkot

Umerkot was badly affected by monsoon rains as water entered houses. People were compelled to wade through knee-deep water on main roads and streets. In a video on social media, people could be seen taking shelter in a school in Goth Digu Farm. Adding to their miseries, electricity supply to the entire area also disrupted.

Meanwhile, Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa directed Karachi Corps to step up flood relief operations to assist affected people due to recent rains in interior Sindh and Karachi.

He said, “Troops must reach out to affected population in distress and extend all necessary care.”
