KARACHI: Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) Chairman Syed Mustafa Kamal on Friday expressed concerns over the recent devastating rain spell that left over 47 people dead and inflicted billions of rupees of financial loss in Karachi, while 80 people lost their lives in other parts of the province.

These statistics are matter of shame and disgrace to a nuclear country. Despite forecast of met office, no precautionary measures were made by the civic agencies, the government was seen nowhere as people were shifting their families to safer locations by themselves, he said.

The Chief Minister of Sindh is in charge of gutter lines and drains which is a true reflection of his prejudice towards the metropolis. He is not devolving powers to the district level in line with the 18th constitutional amendment, Kamal stated.

The FIR of these deceased persons should be registered against the Chief Minister of Sindh. Powers of local bodies representatives as guaranteed in the amendment, have been frozen up to the Chief Minister's House, he said.

After receipt of NFC award from the federation, the province did not launch PFC award. The PPP government divided Karachi into seven parts for its political interests. The Sindh Chief Minister has been claiming that he has developed Karachi far better than it used to be a decade ago.

However, PSP chief said that when he was mayor, Karachi was one of the 12 fastest growing cities in the world and now it is among the four worst liveable cities in the globe. The PPP is protesting against the intervention of the federal government, calling it an insult to its mandate while on the other hand, PPP has been insulting the mandate of the people of Karachi for a long time.

Karachi is not an occupied territory but the economic lifeline of Pakistan. The federal government, Pakistan's armed forces, the judiciary and the media must play their part in rescuing Karachi from destruction. "If Karachi is destroyed, Pakistan will be destroyed. This is a matter of national security."

There should be an investigation into what agenda the rulers here are pursuing by destroying Karachi. Kamal expressed these views while addressing the volunteers participating in the rescue operation under PSP Foundation.
