ISLAMABAD: The spillways of Rawal Dam were opened on Monday as the water in the reservoir increased after heavy downpour in the twin cities. According to officials, the water level of the dam had risen up to 1,751.90 feet, while the capacity of the dam was 1,752 feet.

The authorities opened the spillway up to 1.5 feet for release of 6,000 cubic feet water from the dam, they said. They said that the purpose of opening the spillway was to create space for more rainwater as the Metrological Department had forecasted further rains.

The authorities had informed the people living near the catchments to adopt precautionary measures and transfer their valuables to safe places. Meanwhile, the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) has imposed Section I44 to prohibit swimming in Rawal Dam, Korang Nullah, and other seasonal nullahs of Islamabad.

According to a notification issued by Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat, the administration has imposed Section 144 CrPC to prohibit swimming in Rawal Dam, Korang Nullah and other seasonal nullahs of Islamabad.

The deputy commissioner further said that swimming in Rawal Dam, Korang Nullah and other seasonal nullahs of Islamabad had been prohibited to save precious lives.

It says that it has been brought to the notice of the undersigned that some persons indulge in fishing in Rawal and Simly dam, Swan, Korang Nullah and other nullahs in Islamabad, which is extremely dangerous for human life and incidents have also been reported in this regard.

"In my opinion there are sufficient grounds for proceedings under Section 144 CrPC 1898 and immediate prevention and speedy remedy is justified and the directions hereinafter appearing are necessary," it says, the order shall come into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force for a period of two months.
