KARACHI: Two people were killed and 10 others injured after yet another residential building collapsed in Lyari's Bihar Colony on Sunday morning, police and eyewitnesses said.

Police said the two-storey building allegedly built on an illegal portion was collapsed due to its appeared faulty structure that was further weakened by ongoing construction activity at the adjacent plot. The building's ground portion was being used as coal godowns while the upper portion for the residential rooms.

Following the incident rescue teams, fire brigade department of KMC, besides the police and paramilitary rangers were rushed to the site who conducted rescue operations.

Two bodies were pulled out of the rubble while 10 other sustained injuries.

The bodies and injured were moved to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities and treatment respectively.

Police said one deceased has been identified as Jan Muhammad son of Umer Saeed while the other remained unknown till filling of the report. The injured include Abdul Rehman son of Abdul Raoof, Dawood son of Saeed, Habib son of Sarwat, Umair Khan son of Khan Wali, Sher Khan son of Shamsheer Rehman, Sami Ullah son of Sardar, Riaz son of Umer Saeed, Habib son of Umer Saeed and Umer Khan son of Khan Wali. Police said a case will be registered against the owner of the under-construction plot.

On Thursday, a four-storey residential building collapsed in Korangi's Allahwala Town killing at least four persons and leaving several others wounded.

Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident and directed Commissioner Karachi to submit a detailed report of the incident.

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail called for fixing responsibility for the casualties and damages.

"Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has been a nightmare for Karachi. We need to redesign our strategy for SBCA, this is not working at all," he tweeted.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah taking notice of the building collapse in Lyari directed Commissioner Karachi to ensure proper treatment of the injured and support the family who lost their dear ones.

Shah directed the commissioner to conduct a detailed inquiry and report him. "I want to decide the fate of all vulnerable buildings once for all," he said and added those responsible for allowing substandard construction and illegal buildings must be brought to book," he said. The chief minister said that it was quite painful to hear the incidents of building collapses and loss of life. Karachi Commissioner Sohail Rajput, who visited the site with South Deputy Commissioner Irshad Sodhar, said that the building may have collapsed due to construction activity that was going on in an adjacent plot which may have harmed its "old structure".
