LAHORE: Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar and Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid has approved the budget for the fiscal year 2019-2020 as well as other key agenda items at the 11th Senate meeting of the King Edward Medical University (KEMU) here on Monday.
KEMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Khalid Masood Gondal, Mayo Hospital CEO Professor Asad Aslam Khan, deans, medical superintendents and the representative of finance, health education and other departments were present in the meeting.
On the occasion, the Punjab Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the KEMU, and the Punjab Health Minister also proposed the budget for the year 2020-21. The Vice-Chancellor shared the KEMU's role in controlling the Corona pandemic and the measures to increase the performance of the University. Registrar Dr Riyasat presented the agenda items of the Senate meeting.
The Governor and the Minister appreciated the services of Dr Khalid Masood Gondal for introducing telemedicine and other initiatives at the KEMU. Approval was also granted for rules of Employees Benevolent Fund. While addressing the meeting, the Governor said that during the Corona pandemic, the KEMU played a pivotal role in all areas of research and treatment. "We believe in empowering and strengthening the vice chancellors and no interference will be tolerated in the affairs of universities," he added.
According to him, to ensure transparency and merit, the Punjab Chief Minister and the Minister of Higher Education are all on the same page. The PTI government has ended political interference from universities; all decisions regarding universities are based on merit.
He also appreciated the contribution of Dr. Yasmin Rashid, adding that she played the role of a true team leader during the pandemic. Dr Rashid spoke about the telemedicine project and added that the government has made record hiring on merit. "Our special focus is promoting research in all educational institutions," she added.
