LAHORE: The Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA) Lahore will launch a door-to-door water quality testing campaign from October 19 in the provincial capital. "The campaign will last till December 31. We will test the water quality of every house in the city and subsequently fix the cause of poor quality of water. The main objective of the campaign is to improve water quality supplied to the households in Lahore," said WASA Vice Chairman Sheikh Imtiaz Mahmood while talking to Business Recorder here on Tuesday.

The WASA has constituted a team comprising WASA staff and the members of the tiger force and it will be accompanied by a water quality testing mobile lab. The tiger force will be responsible for the collection of water samples.

"In case a test reveals poor water quality then the WASA staff will determine its cause. If it is due to bad external water pipes then we will replace them. In the event of faulty water pipes found in the house, it will be fixed by us, but its maintenance cost will be billed to the customer," he said.

He observed that it is important to keep the internal water pipes in good condition otherwise contaminated water from these pipes can pollute the main water line in an area and ultimately the entire the neighbourhood will be affected.

The water pollution is one of the big challenges that the provincial metropolis faces. While quoting Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR)'s report of 2009, the World Wide Funds for Nature-Pakistan in its report 'Situation Analysis of the Water Resources of Lahore' said that groundwater from 183 tube wells of Lahore city was found to be contaminated.
