LAHORE: A young girl was killed during a shootout between police and alleged armed bandits outside the Punjab University on Thursday. Police said that a field team of Dolphin Squad and Police Response Unit (PRU) received a call about multiple robbery bids by some armed bandits in Millat Park area of Samanabad.
Acting on the information, both the field teams started chasing the suspects and a shootout took place between them outside the Punjab University in which a girl, Identified as Fatima (22), was killed after sustaining a bullet.
The incident occurred when her father came to pick her up from a private college adjacent to the Punjab University. While confirming death of the girl to the media, Iqbal Town Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammad Ajmal said the girl was pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital.
He said though all three armed bandits have been arrested by the Dolphin Squad after seizing their weapons, the body of the student is being examined to ascertain whether the bullet was fired from the gun of robbers or the police officials.
A police spokesperson said that all the arrested persons were criminal record holder and wanted by police in multiple FIRs registered against them in various police stations. Meanwhile, Punjab IGP Inam Ghani took notice of the incident and directed DIG Operations Ashfaq Ahmed Khan to submit a detailed report to him as early as possible. Efforts were made to contact the DIG but he was not available for comments.
Meanwhile, another alleged audio clip of controversial Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Umer Sheikh went viral on social media on Thursday in which he was threatening and abusing his business partners for "ruining" his business. It may be mentioned that there is a strong resentment among all the senior and junior ranks of police against the "abusive" behavior of the CCPO, who not only misbehaved with colleagues but also citizens on multiple occasions.
