HYDERABAD: Director General Fisheries Sindh Mir Allah Dad Talpur said that to overcome malnutrition problem in pregnant, lactic women and children under age of 6 years, the Government of Sindh constituted a steering committee under the supervision of Chairman Planning Board.

The committee started Accelerated Action Plan (AAP) for reduction of stunting malnutrition to benefit people besides natural water reservoirs by increasing fish production there. In light of the decision 193 ponds were established in different villages of six districts Badin, Sujjawal, Jamshoro, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, and Umerkot. These fish ponds are running successfully by village based organisations.

He said that the main objective to form these ponds is to improve the living standard and overcome malnutrition problem in pregnant and lactic women. A single pond benefited 10 households and each household consist of 7 members and 13,510 people are being directly benefited. Director General Fisheries informed that in order to ensure sustainability village ponds and stocking of fish seeds, three backyard fish hatcheries have been constructed at Thatta, Sanghar and Sukkur.
