This is apropos a Business Recorder news item “Bar council demands resignations of President, others” carried by the newspaper yesterday. According to it Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) demanded immediate resignations of President Arif Alvi, Federal Law Minister Dr Farogh Naseem and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Shahzad Akbar for filing a reference against Justice Qazi Faez Isa tainted with mala fide.
That the President had erred is a fact. But demanding his resignation because he had failed to adhere to the proper or accepted legal and constitutional standards could give birth to a new crisis in the country. In my view, Pakistan Bar Council must revisit its decision in the greater national interest.
