There are numerous devices for charging our appliances such as power banks but they too need to be charged, while wireless charging systems too are connected to a power outlet. But now with new invention, we would not need any electricity at all, as our body movement would be enough for charging device.

Researchers from University of Buffalo and the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) have developed a special metallic tab that would need no power socket but just some body movements.

Researchers made use of an effect called triboelectric charging that people have normally felt before. It occurs when a material becomes electrically charges after coming into frictional contact with another material, for example when we feel a certain electric charge when our body touches someone else’s.

Six charging tips to extend your phone’s battery life

As their study published in journal Nano Energy describes, the tab has a silicon-based polymer, polydimethylsiloxane, pressed between two thin layers of gold. One layer of the gold is stretched and released making it wrinkle. When force is applied again, the layers’ movement and the polymer create friction, explained Futurism.

In the experiment, the tab was capable for lighting up 48 red LED lights simultaneously. As per the researchers, this friction can initiate from even the slightest finger movement. The lead author Yun Xu from CAS said, “The more friction, the greater the amount of power is produced.”

The team will further improve the triboelectric charging device’s performance along with creating a portable battery that can be used in order to store energy the metallic tab produces. For the future, the team is hoping that this device could charge smartphones and other gadgets through body movements, reported TechXplore.

“No one likes being tethered to a power outlet or lugging around a portable charger. The human body is an abundant source of energy. We thought: ‘Why not harness it to produce our own power?’” expressed lead author Qiaoqiang Gan from the University at Buffalo.
