Senate Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will take-up dual nationality bill after Eid-ul-Fitr for discussion. Chairman Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Muhammad Kazim Khan told Business Recorder on Tuesday that the Committee would take-up "The Constitution (Twenty-Second Amendment) Bill, 2012" for discussion. He said that the Committee received the bill last Friday.
He said that he would specially invite coalition partner, Awami National Party (ANP), as it had expressed some reservations on the bill in the Upper House of the Parliament. He added that the Committee would invite ANP Senior Vice President Haji Muhammad Adeel for discussion on the bill.
The Chairman said that "The Constitution (Twenty-Second Amendment) Bill, 2012" seeks to remove impediments in the way of Pakistanis holding dual nationalities/citizenship from contesting elections for Parliament.
When Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Farooq H Naek on July 10 introduced the bill in the Senate, not only opposition party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) but ANP and two highly respected senators of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) - Aitezaz Ahsan and Raza Rabbani - strongly opposed it. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) had reservations but said that it would state those reservations in the Standing Committee.
MQM senator Tahir Mashadi had said that he also had reservations on the bill, and that he would inform the standing committee about his reservations.
