It was only recently that MQM(P) demanded the government form a judicial commission to investigate census ‘controversy’. Speaking at a press conference, its leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui also asked the government to address their concerns and objections over the census results “or else the party has the option to quit the coalition.” This development appears to have constituted the greatest test for the Sindh urban post-Altaf Hussain party. It faces the prospect of losing more space to other political parties, including former mayor Karachi Mustafa Kamal’s Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) and Jamaat-e-Islami, in case it fails to articulate the right approach to the census issue with a view to addressing the concerns of its constituency. This issue has certainly placed MQM(P) in a very difficult situation.
