Apple has warned its iPhone 12 users to make sure that their phones and MagSafe accessories remain more than 6 inches away (5 cm apart or more than 12 inches/30 cm apart if wirelessly charging) from implanted medical devices like pacemakers.

The smartphone manufacturer explained in a new support document published last week that "iPhone contains magnets as well as components and radios that emit electromagnetic fields. All MagSafe accessories (each sold separately) also contain magnets—and MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Duo Charger contain radios. These magnets and electromagnetic fields might interfere with medical devices."

The company says that iPhones and MagSafe accessories may pose a risk to those with medical devices such as implanted pacemakers and defibrillators, as the sensors in those devices may respond to magnets and radios in the accessories or the phones.

While Apple has provided more clarity on this issue, the company has asked users to consult with their physicians and medical device manufacturers for more specific information about their medical devices to learn more about the safe distance that needs to be followed.

Apple also asked its users to stop using their iPhone or MagSafe accessories if they suspect any interference.
