Even deteriorated law and order situation in the city and ever-rising inflation, couldn't refrain Karachiites from their hospitality. They set up roadside Iftar stalls all over they city for the commuters and deprived people. However the numbers of stalls are less as comported to last years and items offers for Iftar also have fewer fruits owing skyrocketing prices of fruits.
Due to the most blessed month in Islamic calendar the people give extra importance to this month and very large number of people either individually or collectively arranges Iftar beside roads for poor people and travellers to get extra blessings of God. Iftar is usually heavy, consisting mainly jalebi, samosas, pakoras, namak para, and fruits besides the staple dates, Sharbat and water. However, this year content of fruits in Iftar is less owing high prices of fruits. People belong to different stratum of society set up Iftar stalls on the roadside for free Iftar to facilitate poor and passers-by without any discrimination of cast and creed. The one that belongs to the upper class and the one that belongs to the lower class both enjoy with same Iftar.
Traders, associations, welfare organisations, area shopkeepers and wealthy people contributed and set up stalls at different road sides including University Road, Tariq Road, Karimabad, Liaqutabad, GuruMandir, Gizri, Rashid Minhas Road, Malir, Model Colony, Hyderi Market, Five Star Chowrangi, Samama Market, M A Jinnah Road, Shahre-e-Faisal, Abul Hassan Isphani Road, Shahra-e-Quaideen and various other parts of the city.
Propel making arrangement of Iftar said that the rupees has lost its purchasing value tremendously as compared to last year and we fail to get sufficient quality of fruits and edible items at affordable price and make Iftar arrangement at larger scale.
They quote that least year they can purchase one dozen bananas at Rs 50, now at Rs 100, apples were of Rs 60 per kg now at Rs 80 to 120 per kg, guava Rs 50 per kg at present it is Rs 90, grapes Rs 100 per kg at present Rs 200, peaches Rs 60 per kg now at Rs 90 and mango Rs 65 to Rs 120 of different quality For many years people of Karachi used to arrange roadside Iftar Dastarkhwans/Stalls voluntarily for travellers and needy people during the whole month of Ramazan and it has now become a tradition.
In different localities of the city, volunteers distribute Iftar food boxes among commuters and passengers riding buses, cars and other vehicles. Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together. A date is the first thing to be consumed when the fast is broken.
