In a special weather advisory the Met Office said here on Monday that two to three monsoon rains are expected in parts of Punjab, KPK, Lower Sindh and Kashmir during the current week. However, the trend of subdued monsoon rains would continue in Pakistan till mid of August 2012.
Spokesman of the Met Office said that rapid development of El-Nino conditions (ie, warming of Tropical Pacific Ocean) had suppressed the monsoon over parts of South Asia leading to deficient rains over Pakistan. PMD had predicted five to 15 percent above normal monsoon rains during this season but, so far, it has been far from normal. Due to El-Nino conditions, the monsoon rainfall activity has significantly enhanced over south-east Asia, and consequently, it has decreased over South Asia. In coming days, more stormy rains are expected at a number of places in South East Asia (China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines and Japan) that will continue submissive monsoon in Pakistan and India.
He said during the current summer, the slow rate of snow-melting and deficient monsoon rains have aggravated the water shortage in Tarbela and Mangla Dams. However, some relief from hot/humid weather and water shortage is very likely in coming few days due to scattered rains/thundershowers in Punjab, Upper parts of KPK, Lower Sindh and Kashmir.
