Sindh Wildlife Minister Dr Daya Ram Essarani Monday said that only 11 peacocks have perished by the viral disease since July 18. Addressing a press conference after holding meeting with officials of wildlife and animal husbandry departments at his office, he said media was highlighting exaggerated figures regarding the death of peacocks in Thar desert.
He said only five peacocks died in a village in Mithi Tehsil on July 18 while four deaths were reported the next day. Two peacocks died later. The confirm figure is 11 deaths while 14 birds are suffering from Rani Khet, a viral disease, he added. The Wildlife department has no doctor of its own therefore we sought help of veterinary doctors of animal husbandry department.
The animal husbandry department also provided medicines which are sufficient for treating 30,000 peacocks, he told. Dr Daya Ram said the dead peacocks were sent to poultry Research Institute for ascertaining the disease. He said after the reports of spreading the disease to other districts, his department has also set up a camp in Badin and now would pay attention to Sanghar district.
