Senator Haji Mohammad Adeel, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and Senior Vice President Awami National Party, has condemned the holding of presidential elections in the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. He said he did not recognise the constitutional and legal framework in which those elections had been held.
He termed those elections as a clear cut breach of the UN Security Council resolutions and violation of Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity and a blow to peace negotiations. He said it was another attempt of Armenian side to legitimise occupation of Azerbaijani territories, which was totally against international law. He said those elections would have a negative impact on the peace process of resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
He mentioned that Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs in February 2012 had unanimously passed a resolution in which the Committee had condemned the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia and the genocide committed by Armenian armed forces in the Azerbaijani Town of Khojaly on February 26, 1992 against civilian population.
The Committee had re-affirmed the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan within internationally recognised borders. The Committee had demanded implementation of resolutions of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly on immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of all Armenian forces from all the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and had called upon the international community and international organisations to urge Armenia for implementations of these decisions.
The international community was also asked to fix responsibility for this genocide. The Committee had supported the efforts of the Republic of Azerbaijan to resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict by peaceful means.
