Samsung is working to develop a drone that can be controlled simply by eye movements, hand gestures and position of the user.

In February 2018, Samsung was granted approval of its latest patent on that was initially filed in January 2016. The patent was first noticed by LetsGoDigital and describes a drone that can detect person’s face and pupils and can be controlled by them.

The patent demonstrated a picture that had a screen at the center with four propellers on each corners. As described, the self-operated drone is likely to include a camera and an observation system for conveying data to the main control unit. Through the system, a person’s eyes, head, fingers, and hands can be tracked in real time. The speed and direction of the drone is controlled by head, eye or hand movement. The main control unit too can track users automatically without the need of any extra gestures and can also adjust its height and angle accordingly.

According to The Verge, the patent also suggests that the unit might incorporate gyroscope sensor, motion sensor, accelerometer, vibration system, obstacle detection unit, voice recognition ability, Wi-Fi, GPS, and few more functions. A ‘joint manipulator’ is expected too, through which the inclination angle can be changed along with reconfiguration of the unit to various forms.

Samsung has explained its device in the patent as a ‘display device capable of changing an angle… based on a gaze of a user while moving along with the user by automatically tracking the user, without an additional operation by the user’.

Daily Mail explained that the drone can be mainly used for commercial advertising to follow customers around, displaying ads as they shop, and can also act as portable billboards. Through the hand-free device, the users can also listen and watch shows, and even read a book while on the move.
