It is a clear and undeniable truth that Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) is synonym of the industrial growth in Pakistan. This institution had very carefully planned, nursed and firmed up the industrial base of the country. It is solely responsible for laying, elevating and expanding it from scratch in 1952 to the high and wide edifice as it exists today.
No doubt the entire spectrum of commerce and industry is rooted deep down to PIDC. Indeed I feel honoured to be commanding a ministry which envelopes within its contours the shining name of PIDC.
Reviewing the performance of PIDC is not just a mention of its history alone or an eulogy of its activities as a corporate entity but in reality it is taking stock of the growth and expansion of industrial-economic ambit of the country all through the last more than six decades. The saga of PIDC is in effect the account of the vicissitudes the industrial sector of the country has passed through. The initiative of Business Recorder to publish a special report on "60 Successful Years of Excellence" of PIDC is thus commendable, giving recognition to PIDC as an emblem for the establishment and growth of industrial sector in Pakistan.
PIDC, established in 1952, surfed and addressed successfully all areas of economic development" industrial, agricultural, mineral, construction etc, and provided the country the due direction for futuristic actions. It provided trailblazer in mining, Ship Building, Steel manufacturing, Chemical etc.
Having established, firmed up the industrial base and providing a lead to further growing up for the now operating private sector. PIDC, after 90's under the government policy, guided by the changed international economic scenario, has been engaged in skill development by way of setting-up Sectorial Development Companies and Skill Development Centers in wide variety of disciplines.
PIDC, in its new role, has addressed wide areas of industrial-cum-social sectors by setting up Skill Development & Common Facility Centers in various industrial hubs all across the country with special attention on far-flung and less developed areas. In this way PIDC is contributing towards development and uplift of the society at large. PIDC has so far ventured in development of sectors related to Technology up-gradation, Gem & Jewellery, Furniture, Stone Cutting, Sports hunting, Embroidery etc, through pooling the expertise of private sectors through PIDC/government funding.
PIDC is indeed an ever-active government arm on the economic front, its achievement of development of industry and development of skills in sectors of social economic importance, speaking by itself. Having acted as Chief Executive Officer of PIDC till resent past, I feel proud to have contributed effectively in strengthening this economic organ of the country. Now as the Secretary Incharge of the Ministry of Production, it is my priority to expand the activities of PIDC yet further and attain maximum development in the country through PIDC initiated projects.
