Unidentified armed riders on Monday hurled a hand grenade at the residence of a trader, located in Defence area. Fortunately, nobody was reported hurt, as the grenade did not explode. The trader's house was targeted after he reportedly refused to pay extortion.
According to police and rescue sources, the incident took place at Bungalow (X-19) in Defence Phase-I, owned by a flour mill owner Mian Naseer where unknown armed riders hurled a hand grenade on the outer wall of the bungalow but fortunately the bomb did not detonate.
When contacted, SP Clifton Dr Farrukh claimed that the attack was aimed at spreading fear and panic among the family of Main Naseer as the grenade did not contain any explosive material. He said the victim, who is a flour miller, had received an extortion slip for Rs 10 million from "Lyari gangsters".
According to family sources, although the trader had registered complaint at the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), the phone calls and other activities of the extortionists did not stop and finally they hurled an empty grenade with an intention to spread fear among the family members.
