The government is making all-out efforts to overcome electricity crisis, Minister for Water and Power Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar said on Saturday. He was talking to media persons after attending a meeting of the special committee of the Council of Common Interests at the Wapda House. The meeting was held to chalk out a mechanism to ensure equitable distribution of available electricity among all provinces.
Chief Minister Punjab is learnt to have agitated in the meeting of the Council of Common Interest in Islamabad the other day. He had urged the Prime Minister to ensure equal power cuts all across the country. Subsequently, a meeting of the special committee of Council of Common Interests was held in Lahore.
The meeting also discussed measures for recovery of electricity dues and payment of circular debt to power producing companies. All provincial chief secretaries and top Wapda officials attended the meeting. The federal minister said the government was focusing on bridging power shortfall and efforts were being made to use coal for power generation.
According to him, the government will check electricity theft with the help of the media. He said the government is also considering setting up a special police force to check power theft. However, he was not sure when the government would be able to overcome the ongoing power crisis. Instead, he kept blaming Chaudhrys of Gujrat for the present crisis.
