Karachi universities celebrate Independence Day

The 65th Independence Day was celebrated at public sector universities in Karachi, including University of Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) and Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University (BBSU) in Lyari, with national fervour and zeal. At a flag-hoisting ceremony was held at the University of Karachi, during which Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Qaiser said.
"This day reminds us that we are a united nation that struggled hard to attain freedom under the guidance and leadership of the Quaid-i-Azam. We celebrate this day to renew our promises with our homeland." He said that this auspicious day, when Muslims of the Subcontinent achieved Independence, should be celebrated despite hardships "we are facing as a nation".
The ceremony started with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, which was followed by flag-hoisting that was performed by the Vice-Chancellor. The function was attended by university's Registrar Professor Dr M Nasiruddin, deans of all faculties, and a large number of faculty members and employees. Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) also held various functions to mark the country's Independence Day.
A flag-hoisting ceremony was performed at the university's Ojha Campus by Dow University's Vice-Chancellor Professor Masood Hameed Khan. He was accompanied by senior faculty members and administration officers, heads of various faculties and departments. The ceremony was followed by special prayers for peace and prosperity.
Professor Masood Hameed Khan paid glowing tribute to martyrs, workers and leaders of the Pakistan Movement whose sacrifices paved the way for the country's independence. Later, Professor Masood Hameed Khan distributed gifts among TB patients. In a message read out on this auspicious occasion, Vice-Chancellor of BBSU, Lyari, Dr R A Shah urged every Pakistani to educate "our children regarding the collective sacrifices rendered by thousands of people for achieving independence".
He said that President Asif Ali Zardari was taking keen interest in development of the university and Lyari as a whole. A flag hoisting ceremony was also held at the university campus which was attended, among others, by Registrar Dr Mehboob Shaikh, Project Director Hussain Moosvi, Controller Examinations Noor Ahmed Memon, faculty members and employees.
