The Independence Day was celebrated in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Tuesday with great zeal and enthusiasm. The celebrations started with a 31-gun salute at the federal capital. National flags were hoisted on government and private buildings. The day began with special prayers in mosques for the unity, solidarity and prosperity of the country and Ummah.
The cities' shopping malls, markets and roads were decorated with national flags and the photographs of national heroes who had struggled hard for the creation of Pakistan. All the major buildings were illuminated with colorful lights, banners and streamers, reflecting national integrity and jubilation.
Vendors had set up stalls in busy markets of the twin cities. In Rawalpindi, national flags, stickers, p-caps, t-shirts, badges, banners, colorful lights were on display for sale. One could see rush of youngsters and children at shops and makeshift stalls set up in the Blue Area, F-7 Markaz, F-10 and F-11, G-6 (Aabpara and Melody) and Super Market F-6 in Islamabad.
The people passionately participated in the celebrations, especially the children, who had decorated their vehicles and houses with national flags. A number of social, cultural and literary organisations, and educational institutes held various programmes to mark the day. National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) organised special programmes in connection with the Independence Day.
