Karachi: The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi staged a sit-in outside the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) head office against acute shortage of potable water in the city.

A large number of JI workers and general public attended the protest at Shahrah-e-Faisal, the other day.

Addressing the protestors, JI Karachi Chief Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that almost the entire city is faced with water crisis.

The citizens are forced to purchase water from water tankers as the government has shunned supplying it through pipelines because of corruption, he said.

“The ruling party, PPP, is directly responsible for the inefficient water supply system in Karachi,” he added.

He paid homage to former city mayor, Late Nematullah Khan for completing the K-III water project and beginning work on the K-IV project to supply 650 million gallons of water per day to the metropolis.

The JI leader accused that the government of putting the important water project on the back burner, adding that the PPP, the PTI and the MQM are responsible for the delay. “All major political parties claimed the ownership of the city but did exactly opposite on the ground,” Naeem said.

He said Prime Minister Imran Khan had pledged a Rs1100 billion package for the city’s rehabilitation earlier and Rs62 billion apart but the government could not spend even Rs5 billion.

He also questioned the outcome of the Karachi Transformation Plan, saying after plundering the city’s resources the PPP government is now planning to privatize the KW&SB.
