Spot basis bids for hard red winter wheat in the US Plains were unchanged on Wednesday in a lackluster market, merchants said. Selling was slow amid declines in futures prices. Kansas City Board of Trade HRW futures ended lower on Tuesday, with KCBT September down 16 cents at $8.52 per bushel.
Protein premiums for railcar wheat to and through Kansas City rose 1-5 cents a bushel for lower and mid-level protein supplies. A Union Pacific train travelling from Colby, Kansas to Corpus Christie, Texas derailed early Wednesday morning. Twenty-three cars, all of them carrying wheat, plunged into a river and riverbank outside Kansas City. A Union Pacific spokesman said it had not yet been determined how much wheat was lost.
