Senior staff reporter of Dawn Shamim-ur-Rehman, who died here on Monday, was a journalist of extraordinary versatility and talent. He was a prolific writer. He possessed great knowledge and understanding of his principal area of expertise: politics. He was a close observer of internal politics of all major parties, particularly the PPP.
He was often found underscoring the need for a healthy debate among political parties over whether the politics of future has to engage with new ideas.
APP adds: Veteran journalist Shamim-ur-Rehman passed away here on Monday after protracted illness. He was 70. Shamim-ur-Rehman was not only an active journalist but also a very nice and friendly human being. He had also played a prominent role in trade union activities and remained office-bearer of the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) and the Karachi Press Club (KPC). Late Shamim-ur-Rehman's contributions towards the realms of journalism would be long remembered. He had served at Pakistan Television and Daily Dawn Karachi.
Shamim-ur-Rehman was laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon here at the graveyard in Pehlwan Goth, Gulistan Jauhar in presence of a large number of his admirers, politicians, members of journalist community and family. His funeral prayer was offered at the Shumail Arcade mosque.
Senator Raza Rabbani recording his comments on the death of Shamim-ur-Rehman termed it a great loss for the journalist community. He said he himself has lost a sincere friend. Amir Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan Syed Munawwar Hassan said late Shamim was a down to earth person. Sindh I.T Minister Raza Haroon paying tribute to the late journalist said. "He was my personal friend and a good human being. We have lost a bold and impartial reporter."
Special Assistant to Sindh Chief Minister Waqar Mehdi said, "I was saddened to hear the news of his demise. He was a good human being and a very friendly person. He always gave a positive side of our point of view." KUJ President G M Jamali on the occasion said he would appeal to the family of Shamim-ur-Rehman as well as to Daily Dawn to which he had been associated till his death to provide his writings to Karachi Union of Journalists to publish them in a form of book.
