A boat carrying 17 picnickers capsized in river Chenab at Punjnad headworks due to high tide in the river here on Tuesday. Rescue teams saved the lives of five people including a woman and two children. However, 12 are still missing. DPO Muzaffargarh Zeeshan Asghar said, "Survival of missing people would be a miracle because human beings can't survive for 24 hours in water.
"We have registered a case under section 302 PPC against three contractors Ghulam Qasim Mirani, Muhammad Qasim and Jamil Bosan, boatman Darvesh and arrested two." Acting DCO Muzaffargarh Muzaffar Siyal told BR, "Three bodies were recovered from the river, two of them have been identified as Zawar Hussain son of Muhammad Hussain of Mailsi, Faraz Hussain s/o Bhora (Mailsi), while nine people Muhammad Azam, Muhammad Khizar, Muzammil Hussain, Muhammad Arshad, Abdul Qayyum, Mujahid, Taj Muhammad and two unidentified women are still missing.
The DCO said Section 144 is imposed at Head Punjnad which strictly prohibited boating in the river but the restriction was violated, as a large number of people gathered at the site of the incident. Despite imposition of section 144, no policeman had been deployed there.
