Government College University Lahore Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Muhammad Khaleequr Rahman on Thursday announced that the university would not increase its fee this year despite all the financial crunch and reduction in government grants. A notification in this regard has also been issued after the approval by the GCU Syndicate that "there would no increase in the fee structure this year."
Professor Khaleequr Rahman last year had slashed the GCU fee by record 23 percent and hostel dues by 50 percent to facilitate students. This year, the decision would provide financial relief to almost nine thousand students of the GCU. Talking about his decision, Professor Dr Khaleequr Rahman said, "the ongoing economic crunch is affecting the budgets of all public-sector universities but it does not anyway mean that the financial deficit is covered from the students."
He said that GCU is might be the only university in Pakistan which has decided not to increase its fee this year. "Students are our top priority and we would take all necessary steps to facilitate them," he added. He said GCU in 2011-12 first time gave away scholarships of a record amount of Rs 20.127 million to its financially-challenged students, and would also continue its practice this year.
