Defending champion Samantha Stosur of Australia advanced to the second round of the US Open on Monday with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Croatian Petra Martic. Stosur needed only 51 minutes to move on and will next face the winner of a later match between qualifiers Edina Gallovits-Hall of Romania and Swiss Stefanie Voegele.
