The newly established Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU), which has also got recognition from the Higher Education Commission (HEC), will start admission process for its very first batch (2012-2013) from September 17, 2012. Initially SMIU will offer admissions on 360 seats in six disciplines of undergraduate programme, with 60 seats each in business administration, computer science, education, environmental studies, English language and media studies.
SMIU Vice Chancellor Dr Mohammad Ali Shaikh told Business Recorder on Wednesday that the varsity had appointed highly qualified faculty including 15 PhDs for all the five disciplines. He said that the university will start issuing application forms from 17th September 2012 and last date of submission forms will be 17th October 2011.
The entrance test for the university's 360 seats is scheduled for November 17, with interviews of successful candidates set to take place from December 3 to 15. Under the admission criteria, an applicant's performance in the interview will count for 40 percent, followed by the entrance test score (30 percent), intermediate result (20 percent) and matriculation result (10 percent).
Dr Shaikh said that the university had commissioned a state-of-the-art TV studio for Rs 10 million, which will be completed by next June. Giving details about the varsity's programmes, he said that the Department of Computer Science will offer industry-oriented 4-year BS (CS) degree programme of 138 credit hours with four specializations: Software Engineering, Computer Networks, Artificial Intelligence and Information Security. The Department of Business Administration will conduct various internationally recognised programmes, which have been designed in consultation with the corporate sector, he added. He claimed that SMIU was the only university that has been recognised by HEC in a shortest period of time after its establishment.
