At least five people were killed in violent incidents in the city on Thursday, police and rescue sources said. A 23-year-old man named Umair was gunned down while two persons were injured in Block A in North Nazimabad after unidentified armed men riding motorcycles opened fire on motorists. The injured persons were later identified as Khizar and Anjum.
The deceased lived near the Nagan Chowrangi locality while the injured men live in Orangi Town. A 24-year-old activist of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Irfan Sona, who was injured the other day in a firing incident in the Nishtar Road area, died in hospital. He was brought to the hospital in a critical condition. The deceased lived in the Usmanabad area.
A school teacher, Mumtaz, was shot dead on the Mirza Adam Khan Road in Lyari in the jurisdiction of Chakiwara police station. The body was shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi. Police said that deceased used to live in the Saeedabad area and worked as a teacher at the Government Boys' Secondary School (GBSS) for past 15 years. No FIR was registered till the filing of this report. A 14-year-old boy named Tayyab Ali was killed in police lock-up in Hyderi police station after being subjected to excessive torture
Sources said that police had picked up two brothers, Tayyab Ali and Jaffar Ali, from the Kausar Niazi area after they were suspected to be involved in a robbery at the home of one of their neighbours. Sources said that both boys were badly tortured by police and as a result, Tayyab died. Police, meanwhile, claimed that the deceased was a drug addict and had died because of an "overdose of heroine".
As news of his death spread, local people staged a protest outside the Hyderi police station. They also ransacked the police station, besides pelting stones at policemen. SSP Captain Asim claimed that the deceased was a "heroine addict". He also said that the SHO of Hyderi Police Station had been suspended and an investigation into the incident had been launched.
Meanwhile, a former income tax officer was shot dead in the limits of Gizri police station. He was identified as Mumtaz Ahmad Shaikh, 55, son Ali Mohammad Shaikh. Police said that unknown armed men had shot Mumtaz Shaikh near his home close to Yasrab Imam Bargah. The body was moved to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).
