KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has demanded of the Election Commission of Pakistan to issue a ‘policy statement’ to clear the confusion created by the PPP government in connection with ‘two-step mode’ of local government elections.
Addressing a press conference, he said that following the failure in postponement of the local bodies’ polls, the PPP government in Sindh announced to hold the elections in two steps, in an attempt to rig the polls and create a divide within Karachi.
He made it clear that the JI would not accept any such divide and said that the PPP should have adopted a democratic approach as it claimed to be a democratic party.
He alleged that the PPP government in Sindh was employing nefarious tactics to obtain results of its own choice in the local bodies polls. He further alleged that it was illegally exercising its administrative powers.
Naeemur Rehman said that head of JI election cell Raja Arif Sultan has already written a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan demanding the ECP to take notice of the conduct by the PPP government in Sindh.
He further said that some of the PPP leaders have launched a campaign against the JI for targeting the PPP government's corruption.
He said that Saeed Ghani earlier blamed Karachiites for the failure of the government and later sought pardon and withdrew his accusations but claimed that JI workers were responsible for the blockage of drains. He said that the PPP leaders were issuing illogical statements and accusations in frustration over their expected humiliation in the local government polls.
He also asked his party workers to gear up for the Oct 23 elections.
He asked them to monitor the quality of ongoing road patchwork and other developments in the megacity in order to ensure transparency.
