The labour department and other relevant agencies have come into action against illegal factories, offices and business premises in the city in the aftermath of the tragic inferno in Lahore and Karachi that left over 300 dead two days earlier. According to sources, inspection of factories and other business premises was underway throughout Saturday.
Some offices, situated in residential areas, were also sealed during the inspection of the concerned departments. Those inspected, sealed their offices from fear that the government departments would use this as an opportunity to exhort bribes from businessmen to get a clearance certificate.
They said similar action in the past proved futile and government officials spend more time on arm twisting businessmen instead of taking concrete steps to close down illegal factories and offices, not fulfilling labour laws. It may be noted that a serious debate has started soon after the inferno in Lahore and Karachi and critics are giving a tough time to the provincial governments, both in Punjab and Sindh for not activating the labour departments.
