Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday claimed that the party's successful membership drive in recent months has now crossed over 10 million members. A senior PTI leader who wished not to be named told Business Recorder that the party has now over 10 million registered members and they are confident of winning in the upcoming general elections.
Comparing the party's burgeoning vote bank with the other two major political parties - PPP and PML-N - he claimed that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), arguably Pakistan's largest political party, did not have a total vote bank of 10 million people in 2008. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), he added, could only boast of 7 million voters in the last general elections.
PTI had wrapped up its membership drive in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab earlier this year, while they are trying to gather as many supporters as possible from Sindh and Balochistan. The party had extended its membership drive in the two provinces till July 31.
When the drive started, the PTI had aimed for four million registered members. PTI recently launched a nation-wide campaign all over the country in order to enroll maximum possible members for the upcoming general elections. The campaign so far is nothing short of a success as people from all parts of the country have actively taken part in the membership drive of the party that promises to bring a change of people especially the youth or a tsunami as defined by Imran Khan, the leader of PTI.
It must also be noted that once an unnoticed party -PTI-has recently emerged as one of the major parties in the upcoming general elections with stalwarts such as Makhdoom Javed Hashmi and Shah Mehmood Quereshi, among others. The party focuses on the younger generation which is the motivating force behind PTI as they want a change from the traditional sardar/wadera/landlord politics.
The PTI leader said that the party will also approach the silent majority that has never taken part in active politics as they have lost faith in the country's leadership. "We will get in touch with the people through social media where people have already announced their decision to join the party as they see us as the saviour of the country", he added.
He said that the party would sign a new social contract with the people where their issues would be identified. "In future we will be either in the government or in the opposition, under this contract we will consider ourselves responsible for resolving their issues and the party will not deviate from its stance", he maintained.
