Cameroon cocoa exports hit 12,308 tonnes in the first month of the 2012/13 harvest season in August, up more than 25 percent from the same month last season, statistics from regulator the National Cocoa and Coffee Board (NCCB) showed on Monday.
The data, confirmed by the world's fifth largest cocoa grower's Cocoa and Coffee Interprofessional Board (CCIB), showed that exports rose by 25.87 percent from the revised 9,778 tonnes recorded a year ago. Both officials of the NCCB and CCIB said the increase in the monthly exports was an indication that production in the country may be higher this year, after falling from the record 240,000 tonnes in 2010/11 to 220,000 tonnes in 2011/12.
Olam Cam, a subsidiary of Singaporean commodities firm Olam , topped the monthly export chart with 4,163 tonnes up from 2,709 tonnes in August 2011, followed by Cameroon Marketing Commodities (CAMACO) with 2,909 tonnes against 1,169 tonnes for same month the previous year.
