The city unrest following the strike call given by Jamaat-e-Islam (JI) in protest against the killing of one of its local leader, Dr Parvez Mehmood late Monday night, claimed the lives of at least 13 persons, including three political activists, on Wednesday. At least 10 more persons were injured and several roadside stalls and a truck was set ablaze.
Although partial strike was observed in the city, markets in Old City areas remained closed, as rioters, who were out on streets since Tuesday night, resorted to heavy gunfire in several localities. However, shops at Tariq Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Federal 'B' Area, Liaquatabad, Karimabad and many other localities remained opened. Public transport remained thin in several areas, creating severe problems for commuters. Fuel and gas stations in most areas remained open. Incidents of violence and arson occurred in many localities, including Patel Para, New Karachi, Nazimabad, Orangi Town and Lyari where protesters burnt tyres and blocked roads.
Protesters torched several stalls in New Karachi while a truck was also set ablaze at Qauidabad. Incidents of heavy aerial firing were reported from Nazimabad, Lea Market, Lasbela, Solider's Bazar, New Karachi, Qauidabd, Shah Latif Town and elsewhere. Following the JI's strike call, all commercial and social activities remained suspended in these areas.
According to police and rescue sources, unidentified armed motorcycle riders dragged a 27-year-old man, Salman, from his car and shot twice in his head in an execution style. The incident occurred at Malir Halt in the limits of Saudabad police station. His body was later shifted to Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC).
Two MQM men named Ghulam Sarwar, 30, and Abdul Ghani, 32, were killed in a drive-by shooting at Gharibabad in Malir City police precincts. Police said the Ghulam was a member of Muttahida Organising Committee (MOC) while Ghani was an "active worker". In another incident, unknown armed men barged into the house of Muhammad Yaqoob in Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station precincts and opened indiscriminate firing on Yaqoob's son Waheed and his daughter Ameena. As a result, both were critically injured and were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) where Waheed succumbed to his injuries. Police said the deceased was the brother of an MQM activist.
Meanwhile, armed assailants shot multiple fires at a Daboo Shop located at Block S in the jurisdiction of Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station. As a result, Bahadur Hussain, Faisal, Mujeebullah, Jahangir and Sahib Khan were injured. The injured were later shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where Bahadur succumbed to his injuries.
An unknown man was killed in a firing incident in the Garden area in the precincts of Nabi Bux police station. A 30-year-old man named Abid Jan was killed at Dalmia Road. Aziz Bhatti police said the deceased, who lived in Gulshan-e-Iqbal's Blocl 10-A, might have been killed by drug pushers.
Another man named Akram, 25, was killed in a firing incident in Sector 13-C of Orangi Town. Police said the deceased was targeted outside a marriage hall. Armed men killed another man named Wazir Khan, son of Mir Dad, in Bin Qasim police limits. Police said he might have been murdered over a personal feud, adding that he was wanted in the murder of one of his relatives in Swat. A decomposed body of a eunuch was recovered in Gulistan Colony in the jurisdiction of Chakiwara police station. Police said that the body had been dumped at least six days ago and the eunuch had been killed because of a deep wound to his head. Another MQM activist named Umair, son of Shujat Hussain, was killed near Sindhi Para in the limits of PIB Colony police station. A 30-year-old man named Irfan was killed while eight others were injured in armed clashes between the two rival groups in Usmanabad, Garden and Cheel Chowk areas.
