The release of anti-Islam film is a deliberate attempt to provoke the sentiments of Muslims, whereas an act of extremism and militancy not merely means physical violence, it is also tied to intolerance and religious provocation, Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting said on Wednesday. The committee urged the government to raise the issue at the annual UN General Assembly session scheduled later this month.
Senator Farhatullah Babar, a committee member has moved a resolution against the release of anti-Islamic movie, which was unanimously endorsed by all members of the committee. The committee urged the government to formally call upon the United Nations to work out special strategy for promoting religious and cultural harmony to prevent the complete destruction of fast eroding rationality without any exception. Any exception or selectivity will shake the faith in universal norms of the UN Charter, the resolution said.
Expressing grave concern on blasphemous tendency shaking religious harmony across national boundaries and religious divides was on the rise. However, the increasing trend seemed to corroborate the ominous theory of a clash of civilisations, the resolution said. Chairman committee, Senator Kamil Ali Agha presided over the meeting of the committee held in the parliament. The committee was briefed about performance and working of Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC), Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) and Information Service Academy.
