Residents of twin cities of Islamabad/ Rawalpindi were trapped in their homes after protests turned violent on Friday. A mob started damaging private and public property, including petrol pumps, cars and signboards, as security forces were unable to control them.
The government thought that leaders of various political and religious parties would guide participants of rallies, but this did not happen. Subsequently, mob rampaged with full impunity on city roads. Some criminal elements might have also joined protesters to cause damage.
The worst part was that people, who urgently needed to go to hospitals, were unable to do so because of violence. Residents of twin cities also faced problems to buy essential commodities because of complete closure of markets. Additionally, people were unable to know about the well being of their dear ones because of suspension of mobile services. Rallies from Rawalpindi and Islamabad started rolling off towards the Diplomatic Enclave soon after the Jumma prayers, clashing with police and removing all obstacles in their paths. Initially, protesters remained peaceful, but violence started after protesters torched a CNG station and a number police vehicles at Faizabad.
