Thousands of people on Friday participated in different protest rallies held in the city against an anti-Islam movie, seeking severe punishment to the filmmaker. The charged demonstrators asked the government to end diplomatic ties with the US, Denmark and UK for supporting the anti-Islam forces. They asked the western world to introduce blasphemy laws to protect the sanctity of Islam.
Carrying banners, placards and party flags, thousands of angry protestors took to the city streets after Friday prayers, shouting anti-US slogans. They burnt the effigies of the US President and American flags to denounce the blasphemous film. At some places of the city, group vandals went on rampage with violent demonstrations, spoiling the purpose of the protest. Violent clashes also left a number of police personnel and protestors injured. The workers of political and religious parties including Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), Jamat-ud-Dawa, Ahle Sunnat-wal-Jamaat, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, ANP, MQM, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Sunni Tehreek, Wahda-tu-Muslimeen, Ansar-ul-Muslim, and other small groups participated in the protest.
In Friday sermons, religious scholars had urged the protestors to remain clam during the rallies and abstain from violence and vandalism. The religious leaders participating in the rallies also emphasised on remaining non-violent to give a clear massage to the western world about their sentiments. Speakers at different rallies sought a strict punishment to the anti-Islam filmmaker for his unacceptable act. They urged the US to stop its clandestine support to the persons behind such acts.
They said that the US should openly apologise for hurting the sentiments of the Muslims around the world. They branded the US, UK and Demark as "safe dens" for anti-Islam forces. "These nations should stop protecting anti-Islam forces to ensure lasing peace in the world," they added. They demanded of the government and the Muslim nations to boycott the products of the countries supporting the blasphemy perpetrators. They made it clear to the world that Muslims will not tolerate any attempts on their religion.
