NEW DELHI: Indian police have arrested Sikh separatist Amritpal Singh after searching for him for more than a month, a state police official said on Sunday, a move against the revival of an independent homeland in the state of Punjab bordering Pakistan.

The rise of Singh, a preacher in the northwestern state of Punjab where Sikhs are in the majority, has revived talk of an independent Sikh homeland and stoked fears of a return to violence that killed tens of thousands of people in the 1980s and early 1990s during a Sikh insurgency.

"Amritpal Singh has been arrested from the Rode village in Moga district, Punjab on the basis of specific intelligence," Sukhchain Singh Gill, a top official of the Punjab police told reporters.

FM Bilawal to visit India in May: FO

The arrest of Amritpal Singh, 30 -- who leads a group called Waris Punjab De (the heirs of Punjab)-- comes after the self-styled preacher and hundreds of his supporters stormed a police station with swords and firearms, demanding the release of one of his aides.

Police have accused Singh and his supporters of attempted murder, obstruction of law enforcement, and creating disharmony, and said he had been on the run since mid-March.

He was arrested in the village gurudwara, a Sikh temple, under the National Security Act, which allows for those deemed a threat to national security to be detained without charge for up to a year, the police official said.

Gill said he would be moved to Dibrugarh, in the state of Assam, where some of his associates are already in jail.

And now Mr Amritpal Singh will conveniently confess to being funded by neighbouring country. Modi Ji and Amit Shah will fume and froth and get a few more muslims killed.

@Mian Nawaz Sharifshit, bro talk about misplaced priorities. Worry about the muslims killed in your own country standing in line for atta. We will sort out our problems. You have too many. may be if pakistanis focus on their own country, as opposed to muslims everywhere else, you may not be in the hole that you are in.

@TimeToMovveOn, "bro talk about misplaced priorities. Worry about the muslims killed in your own country standing in line for atta." For a start, he's not your "bro" - he's a Pakistani on a Pakistani news site, and you're a hindustani with a chip on your shoulder. Secondly, hindustan actually ranks BELOW Pakistan on the global hunger index - so if a handful of Pakistanis are tragically dying for atta, how much worse is it for you, in a country where the number of people living below the poverty line is twice the entire population of Pakistan? Perhaps if you spent more time addressing your own socioeconomic crises - not to mention your obsession with extinguishing your Muslims with state support - you wouldn't be the third world hypocrites that you are today. Some food for thought (forgive the pun)...

@HashBrown®, Brilliant reply to an ignorant comment....but I really don't blame him/her. Modi's formula of selling " hyper nationalism and Muslim bashing " and firmly controlling the media and the courts has worked well for him......he has understood the mindset of 80% of India.... they are on a roll and trying to talk sense to them now, is pointless.

@Parvez, Thank you brother, and I agree 100%. I think many of them still have a bitter hangover from Partition, and that insecurity is fuelled by their hysterical media - and as you say, it's even worse now that they are being consumed by religious hatred as well. I will admit, it's always enjoyable giving them the occasional reality check (:
