Pakistan on Friday reiterated its stance on US drone strikes, terming these strikes illegal, counterproductive, in contravention of international law and a violation of the country's sovereignty. Responding to a report carried by a US-based newspaper about drone attacks, Foreign Office spokesperson Moazzam Ahmad Khan categorically rejected the insinuation made in the report and reiterated Pakistan's long-standing position on drone attacks.
"Drone attacks are illegal, counterproductive, in contravention of international law and a violation of Pakistani sovereignty. There can be no question of Pakistan's agreement to such attacks," he stated in categorical terms. However, Wall Street Journal, while quoting unnamed US officials, claimed about once a month, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) sends a fax to a general at Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) outlining broad areas where the United States intends to conduct strikes with drone aircrafts and Pakistanis, who in public oppose the strikes, don't respond. On this basis, the report further claimed that Pakistan continues to clear airspace in the targeted areas, the US government concludes it has tacit consent to conduct strikes within the borders of a sovereign nation.
