TEHRAN: Iran struck back at Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday, saying his accusation the Islamic republic is arming Russia was an attempt to gain the West’s military and financial support.

The United States and the European Union have sanctioned Iran over its drone programme, alleging it had supplied Moscow with unmanned aerial vehicles during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – a charge Tehran denies.

On Wednesday, during his daily speech, Zelensky said Tehran’s “support for evil cannot be denied” and appealed directly to Iranians, asking: “Why do you want to be accomplices in Russian terror?”

US says Iran and Russia expanding military cooperation

In response, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said Zelensky’s “repetition of false claims” against the Islamic republic was “in harmony with the propaganda and media war of the anti-Iranian axis”.

“It is done with the aim of attracting as much military and financial aid from Western countries as possible,” Kanani said.

Ukraine, he added, had “specific political goals and motives behind such accusations” and was “avoiding expert negotiations with the Iranian side to investigate the claims”.

Russia has reportedly used 1,160 Iranian-made Shahed kamikaze drones in attacks against Ukraine.

“Even though we have learnt to shoot down most of your kamikaze drones… there are still hits,” Zelensky said Wednesday.

“When an Iranian drone kills a pregnant Ukrainian girl and her husband in their home, why do you, mothers and fathers in Iran, need this?” he added.

“When your Shahed hits a dormitory with our students, people die, a fire starts, rescuers arrive, and in a few minutes a second Shahed hits.”

Russia invaded its neighbour in February 2022, sparking the biggest conflict on European soil since World War II.

Just as the West’s support helped them further their own interests in Afghanistan, Syria, Libya and Sudan? The West’s support so far has done absolutely nothing in Ukraine, other than bankrupt their own economies. The Russians have drained their stockpiles and by all accounts, are in a perfect position to continue the war with the exact same intensity for two more years. The West could barely sustain a year of this war. Forget foreign nations, the West’s “support” in California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas will be even more embarrassing as it already is. They can’t even man their own borders and rely on liberalism to justify their inability to stem the flow of migrants. If they can’t stop millions crossing their borders everyday, why stop people at airports or even seaports? No one understands why people bother with visas and green cards and pay so much when 5% of the entire US population is living there illegally. They don’t even have to hop the fence from the border of Mexico.

Inducting western conventional equipment before it goes obsolete because they can’t upgrade it with their bankrupt economies is a smart decision for any nation. Its no different than procuring U-boats before the end of WW2. You can’t upgrade it but you can get it for free without investing in R&D or worry about maintenance. Most Western military equipment is useless for Ukraine anyway. F-35s can’t fight Iranian drones, F-22s will be retired, the Patriot air-defence was already useless, M1A1/2 Abrams are too heavy for their muddy terrain and the HIMARS didn’t win the Battle of Bakhmut. All of their equipment is just a pile of junk but it serves the desired purpose of reducing casualties and providing a line of defence with expendable, yet expensive military equipment, forcing the foes to respond in kind with their own military equipment, draining them. Helps you protect your own valuable troops and equipment to prolong the fight. If scapegoating the Iranians works, we would do it too.
