Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial administered the oath to Justice Rahman at a ceremony which was attended by the judges of the Supreme Court, Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan and lawyers.

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on May 15, unanimously, recommended the name of Justice (retired) Iqbal Hameedur Rehman for the post of Chief Justice of FSC. President Dr Arif Alvi also approved the appointment of Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rahman.

His father Justice Hamoodur Rahman served as the chief justice of Pakistan in 1968 and was author of the “Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report” which inquired into the circumstances leading to the break-up of Pakistan in 1971. Hamood was the advocate general of East Pakistan in 1953.

Justice Iqbal Hameed on October 23, 2016 tendered his resignation as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, after the filing of reference against him in the Supreme Judicial Council, as a result of the Supreme Court judgment in illegal appointment in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Justice Iqbal was appointed first constitutional chief justice of Islamabad High Court on 03.01.2011 and elevated as judge of the Supreme Court on 25.02.2013.

Justice Rahman was born in Dhaka, formerly Dacca, in 1956. He studied LLB from the Punjab University, Law College, Lahore and graduated as a professional lawyer in 1980.
