LAHORE: For the sale of sacrificial animals on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, the Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL) has identified 10 sites for makeshift cattle markets and sales points in seven zones of the provincial capital.

Among the identified points, three temporary markets would be established in Nishter Zone at LDA City (near Sidhar Village at Kahna Kachha, Defence Road), LDA Avenue-One (on Raiwind Road) and Pine Avenue Road, two at Allama Iqbal Zone at NFC Society (near Bahria Town) and Raiwind (near Haveli Markaz, opposite Nisar Spring Mills on Sundar Road), and one each selling point at Turkey Road, near LWMC dumping point in Lakhodair (Wagha Zone), Site for IT University (Main Campus) on Barki Road, near Paragon Society (Aziz Bhatti Zone), Faqeer Muhammad Dagya Road, near SNGPL Office (Ravi Zone), Hazrat Usman Ghani Road, near Saggian Road (Data Ganj Baksh Zone), and Sports Complex at Adda Rakh Chabeel, near Manwan Hospital (Shalimar Zone). Like last year, the Lahore district administration intends to prohibit trading sacrificial animals outside these markets.

In this connection, the MCL has written a letter to the Lahore district administration, saying it has planned to establish the 10 temporary cattle markets/sale points at the said locations to facilitate the people buying sacrificial animals. Thus, it requested District Commissioner Lahore to approve setting up these sale points to facilitate the buyers and sellers.

Moreover, caretaker Punjab Local Government Minister Ibrahim Murad chaired a meeting to review the arrangements for the sale and buying of sacrificial animals on Monday.

He told the meeting that all local bodies in Punjab have been directed to identify suitable locations for setting up sale points of sacrificial animals away from the urban population and underlined the need for devising an effective monitoring mechanism for the smooth functioning of these temporary cattle markets.

“No expenditure would be incurred from the public exchequer for establishing these cattle markets and sale points this year,” he added.

The Minister asked the officials concerned to make the sale points operational at least 15 days before Eid-ul-Adha and widely publicise its locations for public convenience. He also directed them to provide comprehensive security and cleaning arrangements at these sale points.

“Moreover, arrangements for clean drinking water, lights, generators and parking should be ensured at these places while ramps, sewerage and water tanks should be provided,” he said, adding that drains should be cleaned within five kilometres radius of animal sale points to avoid public nuisance and pre-monsoon arrangements should be finalised at the earliest.

Keeping in view the Congo virus and Lumpy Skin Diseases, he averred that only healthy animals should be allowed in the temporary cattle markets while the entry points of cities should be sprayed to prevent the Congo virus.
