Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has increased daily water releases by 20,000 cusecs downstream the Tarbela dam on river Indus to produce 3,000 MW hydel power generation from the Tarbela power houses. WAPDA sources told Business Recorder here on Monday that earlier IRSA was releasing 70,000 cusecs water downstream the reservoir for irrigation and hydel power generation purposes.
However to meet the electricity demand, IRSA was discharging 90,000 cusecs against the 54,500 cusecs run of the river water on Monday. They said similarly the water regulatory body has also increased outflows by 10,000 cusecs from the Mangla dam against 23,100 cusecs run of the river Jhelum to generate more electricity.
The running water in the river Kabul has dipped to 15,300 cusecs and in river Chenab to 18,800 cusecs at the end of monsoon season. Water level in Tarbela dam has already come down by 5 ft after these extra water releases. Meanwhile the wave of low flood in river Indus and Chenab in the third week of last month is still passing through the lower Sindh. 1,02,717 cusecs water is still flowing in the Kotri barrage, out of which 75,000 cusecs water is being thrown in the Indus dela/ Arabian sea.
