It is heartening to note that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has made it clear that general election can be held by Oct 11 if assemblies are dissolved on Aug 12.

According to ECP Secretary Umar Hameed, the ECP had placed 60 recommendations before the electoral reforms committee and “all our recommendations have been approved.” It is, however, important to note that federal information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb had earlier announced that no date had been decided for the dissolution of National Assembly.

What is more important in this regard is the fact that the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet has approved a technical grant for holding general elections.

In sum, general election now appears to be very much in sight. These developments, in my view, will help resolve the current political impasse in the country in a significant manner. Last but not least, all political stakeholders will be required to act responsibly before and after elections.
